Course Description:

The home club of Padraig Harrington (Open Champion at Carnoustie 2007 when he beat Sergio Garcia in a pulsating play-off over 4-holes, having picked up 6-shots on the Spaniard in the final round. Padraig became only the second Irish man to win a Major in the history of the wonderful game and we look forward to him winning several more in the years to come. Well done Padraig.)  Stackstown was opened in 1975 and indeed Padraig's late father Paddy was one of the founder members. Indeed I can remember the original members picking stones of the fairways on the side of the Dublin Mountains. At the tome all of the members were members of the Garda and somehow they managed to develop one of the most challenging and testing golf courses in the country. The original layout was very hilly, however in recent years improvements have made the course a more pleasurable course to play. Before the improvements I remember meeting my brother Paul in the bar, who is a member after my game of golf and saying to him "I don't know about you "Brud" but I'm too old for this place" he's about seven years my senior and of course I was after having one of those games when everything was a struggle.

Stackstown opens up with one of the most challenging holes in golf with out of bounds all the way up the right-hand-side and everything breaking left into trouble. Most holes at Stackstown are a challenge and require careful club selection and course management the 10th is a tough uphill Par 3 and the finishing hole with water coming into play although a Par 5 is always dangerous.

Stackstown has a proud tradition of developing young golfers and are producing some of the finest to be found in the country, the likes of Mark Campbell, the McDermott brothers Michael & John have all won major honours. Indeed Padraig's achievements on the world stage must surely be a great inspiration to these young men.

Stackstown has an imposing clubhouse with stunning views of the surrounding countryside with the Dublin Mountains above and Dublin City below. The view of the city at night is breathtaking. The visitor to Stackstown will find a very warm welcome and a memorable days golf and will have no doubt in their minds how Padraig Harrington developed into one of the top golfers in the world.

Members Achievements

Stackstown Golf Club won the 10th All-Ireland J. B. Carr Diamond Trophy at the picturesque Woodenbridge Golf Club on Sunday 18th September 2005 when they beat Galway Golf Club in the final by 4-matches to 1, making it a disastrous week for the Galway club and county.

Galway having lost the All-Ireland Hurling final to Cork the previous Sunday, they sent three teams to the Bulmers Cups & Shields to Rosslare Golf Club having won the Connacht Finals in the Barton Shield, Senior Cup and Junior cup, who sadly failed to collect yet another green pennant to their very large collection of national championships.

The Stackstown team beat Munster Champions Nenagh Golf Club by 3½ matches to 1½ in the Semi-Final and met Galway in the All-Ireland Final in this very prestigious championship, with over 180 clubs participating, restricted to players over 60.

The Stackstown team was lead by Pat Malone & Tony O’Mahoney who won their match against Joe Corless & Bill Burke on the 18th, next up was John Kavanagh & Sean O’Dwyer against Bosco McDermott (he of he Galway 3-in-a-row 60’ team) & Mick Dunne who won their match on the first play-off hole. They were followed by Tom O’Donohue & John Mahony who halved with Sean Hosty (Sean was Secretary of the Connacht GUI for many years) & Tom Ford, next on the tee were Pat McNiallais & Patsy O’Connor against Michael O’Hagan & Des Feely who finished their match on the 18th. The anchor team was Frank Kavanagh & Tom Kiely against Denis McSweeney & Tom Feeney. Hence Stackstown recorded a 4 and 1 victory to add another green pennant to their growing collection.

Mark Campbell was selected on the Leinster team for the Interprovincial Matches played at Portmarnock Golf Club from 11th to 13th August 2004. Mark was selected to play in the Home Internationals at Prestwick Golf Club from 8th to 10th September 2004.

Mark also won the 2004 East of Ireland at Portmarnock.

Michael was also on the Irish team that played Wales at Ashburnham on the 27th April 2001. Michael was selected to represent Ireland in the Governor Hugh Carey Cup at Portmarnock Golf Club on 8th-9th of May 2001.

Lady Captain Mary Randles (17) and her Captain's Prize winner Sinead Kearney (27) were 3rd in the regional qualifiers of the Volkswagen-Irish Independent Lady Captains' Classic at The Royal Dublin Golf Club in September 2001. They returned 39pts. It was on to Druid's Glen for the National Finals on the 1st October 2001.

Congratulations to Seamus Doherty (9), who teamed up with Julie Walsh (20) Boystown in the Irish Final of the Spar-Irish Independent Mixed Pairs Challenge at Adare Manor Golf & Country Club. They finished 3rd on a count-back with 54 points on the 25th of August 2001. However, it was good enough to book their tickets for Tenerife in November for the big Shoot out. Where they finished second with a score of 151.

Michael McDermott had a wonderful year's golf. He was on the Irish Youths Team that hammered Wales 9-0 at Malone G.C., on June 28th and the Youths Interprovincial at Thurles G. C. from May 5-7, which Leinster won. He was runner-up to Noel Fox in the Ulster Bank Irish Amateur Open Championship at The Royal Dublin on 14th May. He finished joint 4th in the Cannon Irish Youths Amateur Open Championship, together with his fellow clubman and friend Mark Campbell.

Tom Kiely and John Lowry represented Stackstown in the Toyota-Sponsored "Golf as Gaeilgea" All-Ireland finals at Ceann Sibeal G.C. in September, 2000, having booked their place in the Regional finals at St. Margaret's G.C.

Mark Campbell became the youngest player ever to win the Irish Shell South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship at Lahinch on 28th July 1999 Indeed I had full confidence of Mark doing the business.
